Stunned tornado survivors picked through what is left of their battered communities after storms killed at least 22 people in three states.

Fifteen people died in south-western Missouri.

In the fading mining town of Picher, Oklahoma, at least six people were killed, and at least one person died in storms in Georgia.

Authorities said that as the system moved east on Sunday, storms in Georgia killed at least one person in Dublin, about 120 miles south-east of Atlanta.

Lisa Janak, of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, said a second person found in the home was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

US officials later said evacuations were in progress in flooded coastal communities in the state of Delaware.

Allen Metheny, assistant director of emergency management in Kent County, says rescuers are evacuating as many of the coastal communities as they can. High tides and heavy rains have flooded roads, requiring the assistance of the Delaware National Guard and the Delaware State Police in the evacuation operation.
