Madeleine McCann: Online Video Appeal
An online 'viral' appeal has been released to help find British girl Madeleine McCann who disappeared in Portugal on May 3, 2007. She would now be aged six.
The message is the work of the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre which worked with the McCanns on the video and the ideas behind its distribution and is not the result of any new police intelligence.
Long suffering parents Kate and Gerry McCann have had to deal with the pain and anguish of losing their daughter Madeleine every day and have not given up hope of finding their little girl.
Interpol - the gateway into 187 countries, Europol and national police agencies worldwide are supporting the initiative which is in seven different languages – English, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
Speaking at a news conference, CEOP CEO Jim Gamble said: “The person we are looking to reach is likely to be a partner, family member, friend or colleague of the person or people who were involved in Madeleine’s disappearance."
Gamble added: "The video is a message aimed at prompting the conscience of the individual to remind them that it’s never too late to do the right thing.”
He went on to say that the Jaycee Dugard case, about the girl who was kidnapped in 1991 and kept hidden in a Californian backyard until August this year when she was found by suspecting parole officers, was also a driving factor.
The video can also be viewed at ceop.police.uk and it has been urged that the public link to it and build it into their own online environments.
Gamble couldn't reiterate the importance of this enough: “We want the message to become so widespread that it becomes just one click from any Madeleine search carried out on the Internet”.
