Study finds squirrel tactics
Squirrels appear to pretend to bury food when they know they are being watched, suggesting they understand the intention to steal, according to researchers.
The rodents seem to put on a show of hiding non-existent nuts to protect their food from would-be thieves, New Scientist reported.
Squirrels bury their spare morsels, digging a separate hole for each item. But Michael Steele, of Wilkes University in Pennsylvania, said they are faking burying food up to 20% of the time.
